7 Months Old!

Today Nicholas is seven months old! We still can't believe how big he is. He is too big for 6 month clothes and some 9 month as well. I'm not sure what his length/weight is, but I'm sure he's still at the top of the charts. Today I took him to Greenvale for his second dose of the seasonal flu vaccine. Nicholas was a champ and cried for only a few seconds before calming down. Hopefully we can continue to keep him healthy.

The biggest change this past month was the bottom two teeth that appeared. It seems as though his top two central incisors aren't far away because he is more fussy than usual and can't keep his fingers out of his mouth (still upside down of course). Because he likes to suck on his fingers, he doesn't (and hasn't for a few months) take a pacifier. I'm happy about this since we won't have to deal with the issue of taking the pacifier away from him down the road.

Just recently Nicholas has started to scrunch up his nose when he's happy (sometimes resulting in a snort, which is the cutest thing!) He also is finally able to get his toes in his mouth, which he has been working on for awhile. Nicholas is able to sit by himself, but will end up falling sideways/backwards after a little while if we don't watch him. It also looks like he is in the beginning stages of crawling. He will pull his knees up underneath him, but he ends up going in reverse.

We have recently started him on Stage 2 baby food. He is happy about this because the serving sizes are bigger. Nicholas likes all food and hasn't had any bad reactions since the green bean episode. His mouth is always open and ready for more when he's in the high chair.

Up until the week of Christmas, his schedule was pretty consistent - go to bed at 8 and wake up around 6:30. Now we are working on getting him back on that schedule.

Jolly Ole Saint Nick!

With all of our Christmas festivities, it's been awhile since I've updated the blog. We all had a wonderful Christmas and enjoyed spending time with our families!

Christmas eve was spent with the Davenport clan. There Nicholas received lots of cute clothes, toys and a very cool time capsule box that contains magazines and papers from the week he was born. Nicholas wasn't quite sure what to do with the wrapping paper, but of course everything he could get his hands on went straight for his mouth.

Santa brought Nicholas a swing, Leap Frog learning table, a lion riding toy, blocks and more! His favorite is the swing, which we put up in the sun room right now until the weather gets warmer. Daddy's gift is a trip to Pasadena to see his Crimson Tide play in the Rose Bowl. I'm also working on a scrapbook for this years football season for him (this was supposed to be done by Christmas, but I'm not even close). I received some gorgeous diamond earrings and a great pedicure/massage tub for my feet! Can't wait to test it out! Gigi and Pawpaw drove up Christmas day to join us. Unfortunately Gigi didn't feel very well, but she couldn't let a cold keep her away from her only grandson!

The day after Christmas was spent with the Martin family. We had some delicious BBQ along with plenty of tasty snacks and desserts. Next Christmas will be interesting... All of those girl cousins better watch out!

Last night, while celebrating my friend Elizabeth's birthday, we felt a little something in Nicholas' mouth. Then this morning we could really feel and see both of his bottom central incisors. According to his baby book, he is right on schedule for this. I'm really going to miss those gummy grins! Also, we believe Nicholas is entering the early stages of crawling in that he has started to stick his butt up in the air and pull his legs underneath. For now he is content rolling over in order to get anywhere.

Apparently Nicholas has brought daddy and the Crimson Tide luck since they are headed to the National Championship in Pasadena. Daddy says it's only fitting since they also went the year he was born.

I finally ordered our Christmas cards. Hopefully I can get them, address them and send back out before Christmas gets here. We had contemplated putting the following picture in the card because we both thought it was too funny, but in the end I decided to go with the traditional Christmas sweater/Christmas tree pic.

Santa's Helper

6 Months Old

Yesterday, Nicholas turned half a year old! It's hard to believe how big he is, which is why I waited to post until today because we visited Dr. Whitaker for his 6 month checkup today. He weighs 18 lbs, 3 oz and is 29 inches long (which puts him in the 75th and +95th percentiles respectively). He also received 5 shots today including the flu and H1N1. Nicholas was not a fan of those, but recovered very quickly. According to Dr. Whitaker, he is not constipated like we had thought. I suppose it's just a new phase in the dirty diaper department.

Nicholas is doing all kinds of new things now: rolling over both ways, sitting by himself in the tripod position (his hands helping him sit up), he sometimes will stand up assisted but this doesn't happen often. Nicholas loves Bama. If Bama would sit still (yea right), Nicholas would stare at him for hours. This should make for an interesting relationship when Nicholas becomes even more mobile.

We are still giving him baby food just at breakfast and dinner, but will probably introduce some at lunch time in the next month or so. We also just introduced water to him, which he wasn't too fond of. I am very thankful that nursing is still going well. Even Dr. Whitaker was impressed that we haven't had to supplement at all.

As far as sleeping, he is finally recovering from last weeks change in schedule and sleeping through the night again. Nicholas went to sleep around 8pm the last two nights, but woke up about 30-45 minutes later both nights. Last night was rough because we decided to let him cry it out. This lasted a good 30+ minutes. It's rather hard to ignore a crying baby for that amount of time, but we did it.

To celebrate his 6 month birthday, we took him to see Santa at Bass Pro Shop here in Leeds. We had to wait in line for about 30 minutes, which wasn't too terrible. Nicholas didn't mind sitting in his lap at all, but didn't seem all that thrilled either. Once I get the digital version, I'll make sure to upload it.

Thanksgiving Week

This past week has been rather hectic and frustrating. Tuesday morning, we loaded up and headed to Mobile for Thanksgiving. Nicholas slept for about an hour and a half, but that wasn't near what we had hoped as the 4+ hour drive can seem even longer with a fussy/squealing baby. Actually starting Monday evening, his schedule was WAY off. He didn't go to bed until late (around 10pm). In Mobile, his naps and bedtime were completely off - not going to bed until close to midnight one night and that was after Gabe and I took him for a drive around Mobile. We ate Thanksgiving lunch with all the Thompson's and then had to leave in order to make it home in time for Thanksgiving dinner with the Davenport/Martin families. On the way home he slept again around an hour and a half. We had to resort to the portable DVD player and Baby Einstein, which go figure worked great.

It's nice to be home, but unfortunately his sleeping habits are interrupted by more than just the travel. Nicholas has pretty much gotten the rolling over thing down, which is great, just not in the middle of the night when he rolls over and can't go back to sleep. We also think he has been more fussy due to constipation. Even after giving him several jars of prunes, he still isn't back to normal and I'm sure doesn't help things. I am definitely going to bring this up with Dr. Whitaker on Monday for his 6 month check-up.

Regardless, we are very thankful to have this little guy in our lives. It was good spending time with all our family! Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! Here are a few pics from our time in Mobile

I spoke too soon

So apparently I was wrong about Nicholas liking all the food we give him. Tonight we decided to try out green beans. He was not a fan of those!! We were good to get through half the container. The video explains it all. It was too funny!

Rolly Polly

In my attempt to track all of Nicholas' firsts, I'm puzzled. It just seems that for many firsts there isn't a real specific date to list. First time to hold his head up - well he was technically able to pull his head back the second day after he was born. First smile - well he would smile early on when he had gas or when he was sleeping, so when do you technically record that? Nicholas - I apologize if I'm not doing my motherly duty in recording all the correct dates. :-)

Yesterday is what I consider his first time to roll over from tummy to back. He has technically done it before a few weeks earlier, but he was attempting to look at the monitor above his crib, so I didn't really count that. Yesterday he was having tummy time on the floor and rolled over. He was on his tummy and rolled over his left side. Then today he was playing on the floor on his back while I was wrapping some Christmas presents. When I looked up he had flipped over his left side and onto his tummy. I was surprised because recently we could tell he was working to flip over, but it normally took a lot of effort.



Now we are going to be extra cautious when he is on the changing table. Also, it will make putting him to sleep a bit harder if he is still awake and flips onto his back. I'm just happy to see that he is progressing normally. Before long he will be scooting across the floor! Watch out Bama!

Love those hands

For the past three months, Nicholas has spent the majority of his days and part of his nights chewing on his fingers. He has no preference as to which hand or finger, as long as they are in his mouth. He will even put our fingers in there. Let me tell you, he has some strong gums! The few times we let him use our fingers, he will chomp down. Recently we have noticed he has a tendency to turn his hand upside down and then stick it in his mouth. Your guess is as good as mine as to why he does this, but it is rather funny to watch.




Daddy has been extremely happy this football season. This past weekend he was actually home for the game since it was at Mississippi State, so he had to get Nicholas into his game gear as well. From the look on his face in this picture, he has his game face on too!




Finally, congrats to the Tortorice's! Ella Grace was born on Saturday - 20 inches long and 7lbs 11oz. Everyone is doing well and Nicholas is looking forward to meeting his future girlfriend!

No Airplane Necessary

Tonight Nicholas experienced his first fruit - bananas. Of course he loved them as he has every other food (carrots, squash, and sweet potatoes). It's so funny to think of all the tricks people do to get babies to open their mouths and shove the spoon in - "Here comes the airplane" and the standard of mom or dad opening their mouth to have the baby do the same. We have never had to do this with Nicholas. If the spoon is in his line of sight, his mouth is open. The only issue we do have during dinner is keeping his hands out of his mouth. We learned early on to keep one hand restricting his movement, while the other one feeds him. All in all he is a really good eater. :-)

Prayers

It really amazes me how people can easily do the most unconscionable things. It physically hurts me to think of all the elderly people in this world that get taken advantage of by greedy, heartless, deceitful "human beings". It would take forever for me to explain the situation - let me just say I have recently witnessed an injustice of the worst kind.

My prayer is this: God, please give not only the elderly, but all of us the ability to discern friend from foe. For those who can't see the forest through the trees, I pray they listen to family and true friends who have their best interest at heart.

Nicholas was the cutest frog ever! We went to Trunk or Treat at First Baptist in Leeds and showed off our little froggie! He was so tired since he didn't hardly nap today, but was such a trooper! Good thing his outfit was all fleece because it was cold outside.

5 Months Old!

Nicholas is 5 months old today!

Each month that passes gets more and more fun. He is crazy about his feet and will grab both any chance he gets. This makes it hard to keep socks on his feet longer than a few minutes. We have discovered that putting shoes on solves this problem, especially since the weather is starting to get cooler.

He loves to razz for long stretches. In fact, just the other night, we let him lay in his crib for a few minutes as he was content. When we went to check on him, it looked like he was foaming at the mouth because of his constant razzing and blowing bubbles.

Nicholas still pretty much only giggles when he is naked and on his changing table. This is fine with us, just so long as we hear those precious laughs.

He is wearing size 3 diapers now and will probably continue for awhile. We are still using diapers from the shower, but we are close to running out. Again, I can't thank the Beth and Brad enough for the wonderful shower!

Thankfully Nicholas is still nursing well. When he does get a bottle, it is usually 6 oz. We also started giving him cereal in the mornings and baby food in the evenings (only carrots so far, but we will move to squash next).

His naps during the days are irregular. Recently he has had a 3 hour nap several days in a row, but he will mostly nap for 1-1.5 hours at a time. Bedtime hasn't been very consistent recently, but he is doing great about sleeping until at least 7am or later.

Saturday will be his first Halloween and he is going to look so precious in his frog costume! Stay tuned for pictures!

Happy Birthday Daddy!

Gabe - Nicholas and I wish you a happy birthday! Gabe had the day off and spent it with Nicholas and also cutting the lawn. We had a delicious dinner at Mimi and Pop's followed by a combo platter of desserts.

Yesterday was another day of firsts. Nicholas and I had our first pumpkin carving (I know Pawpaw claims we did one when we were little, but sorry I don't remember it) :) Daddy carved a great scary pumpkin!





Then later that evening, Nicholas tasted his first baby food (besides cereal) - carrots. He gave us his customary grimace at the first bite, but soon learned to love them.




Finally, Gabe and I just have to laugh at this patch of dark hair at the back of Nicholas' head. It's the only hair left from when he was born. Crazy how dark his hair used to be!

What else can break on us?

It seems that things tend to occur in threes. Our three recently were things breaking down. First my car had belt issues (which luckily Pop was able to fix), our microwave of less than a year is no longer working and finally our heat/AC went out this week. Luckily the weather was pretty mild this week and we only went about a day and a half before our replacement was installed and running.

Several nights this week were bad due to Nicholas cutting two teeth. Thanks to my friend Dawn's advice on purchasing Hylands tablets, which helped a few nights. However, one night nothing seemed to do the trick. Finally Gabe decided to drive him around Leeds/Moody to see if that would help. Of course it worked and he was able to transition Nicholas from the car seat to the crib without him waking up. He was out... Again I think this is one of those rights to parenthood that everyone must go through because I can't tell you how many stories I've heard where a ride in the car helped calm a baby down. We can definitely attest to this.

Another first!

This past weekend I've tried putting Nicholas down at night before he was actually asleep so he doesn't get used to us rocking him to sleep every night and so he learns how to self soothe. Well it didn't exactly work as he cried for about 20 minutes before I gave up and picked him up. I did however discover that both Saturday and Sunday night he flipped over on to his back not long after I put him down. I believe he had some help in flipping over as he loves staring at the lights on our video monitor camera set up at the corner of his crib. He will crane his neck to see the camera lights and I guess the weight of his head helps him flip over.

Gabe and I also recently discovered what others have been telling us for awhile... Nicholas loves flying over daddy's head. Sunday evening after getting his bath and jammies on, Nicholas was "flying" and proceeded to spit up his cereal dinner all over daddy. We have been told that "Yeah you will do that until the first time he spits all over you." I guess we have to experience all those great parent firsts to get the full effect of parenthood.

Razzle Dazzle!

Just this past week Nicholas has discovered how to razz - basically he makes wet razzing noises and makes little bubbles. He seems to do it constantly (at least when his hands are not in his mouth). He has also started to grab his feet. I'm sure it won't be long before he tries to stick those in his mouth along with everything else.



Recently he has been rather fussy around bedtime and I'm wondering if it has to do with those bottom teeth he is cutting. Any recommendations on how to deal with a fussy teething baby are greatly appreciated!

4 Months Old!

Nicholas is 4 months old! It seems that just recently we realized how big he is getting. Nicholas weighs 16 lbs, 4 oz and is 26 3/4in long, which puts him in the 90th and 97th percentiles respectively. Dr. Whitaker again said that he is thriving. He received 5 vaccines (only one orally and the rest in his cute/fat thighs). He of course screamed after the first one and continued throughout, but calmed down after not too long. His next doctors visit will be at 6 months, where he will receive the flu shot and possibly the swine flu shot as well.

Dr. Whitaker gave us the go ahead to start solids, starting with cereal, which is good since we already gave him some this past week. Once he gets the process of swallowing thicker cereal (right now we make it very soupy) we can move over to vegetables and then fruit. He is still only getting 6 ounces when he gets a bottle. Right now he is wearing 2-3 diapers. It seems that we aren't running through diapers as quickly as we used to, which is nice. We have yet to use up all the diapers we received at the diaper shower, which is amazing!

Apparently Nicholas is cutting two teeth on the bottom, which explains why he is constantly sucking on his fingers and drooling. I had noticed a white spot in the back of him mouth, which looked like it could be a tooth coming in. I knew that babies cut their teeth in the front first, but I did question this white spot as a tooth. Well, the spot is a gum cyst and Dr. Whitaker said there is nothing to worry about, very common and no treatment needed. So, yes, I was crazy for thinking it was a tooth.

He is really starting to grab at things (including daddy's chest/arm hair and mama's neck - both of which hurt pretty bad). Nicholas loves sitting up (assisted) and when laying on his stomach can prop himself up on his forearms.

He is an amazing sleeper! Most nights we try to get him in bed around 8:30 or so and he will usually sleep until 5-6am, eat and then go back to sleep for several more hours. Some nights he wakes up about an hour after we put him down, but hopefully he will grow out of that. Most days he will have about a 2 hour nap around mid-morning.

Another cereal eater in the family

For those of you who really know me, know that I can't go many days without my cereal (a Cheerios girl through and through). Well Sunday, we decided to introduce Nicholas to rice cereal. While most of it did end up on his bib, he seemed to get the concept of a spoon rather than a bottle and by the end kept more in his mouth than on him.

Trying to not pull my hair out

It's not as it seems. My hair for the past several weeks has just been falling out in gobs. I think at this rate I will be bald by Christmas. I had always heard that when you are pregnant and on prenatal vitamins that your nails get stronger and your hair becomes thicker. My nails definitely did get stronger, but I didn't really notice any change in my hair. I thought this might be the reason for my hair loss, but the crazy thing is that I'm still taking prenatal vitamins. Very bizarre!

Luckily I'm recovering from my cold and Nicholas didn't catch anything. I told Gabe that he shouldn't get sick since he's getting all of my immunities. We have discovered the source of my illness. Apparently every time I work the childrens consignment sale at church, I'm sick the next week. I guess next time I'll just cover myself in antibacterial soap/lotion. The good part about the sale was that I was able to stock up on some Christmas toys for Nicholas (Baby Einstein DVDs, play table, etc) and some holiday clothes, which included the cutest frog costume for Halloween!

Tickle me Nicholas!

After hearing that Nicholas giggled for Mimi and Pop last Tuesday, we were determined to hear it ourselves. So Saturday morning, Gabe starting tickling Nicholas on his changing table (where he always seems to be happy) and he giggled a few times in a row. It was the best thing ever!

At this point, I'm trying to keep my distance as much as possible since I have a cold and don't want to share it with the little guy. So far I think it's working, but I still have symptoms, so we aren't in the clear yet.

So Nicholas had his first out-of-state experience this past weekend when we visited our friends Ben and Jamie in Georgia. Gabe went to the Bama/VA Tech game on Saturday with Mumbles and the rest of us watched the Auburn and Bama games back at the Tortorice house. We had a great weekend except when I upset Nicholas by yelling at the Auburn game. I was holding him when LA Tech scored and apparently I was louder than I realized. Nicholas made this horrible face and started crying. Luckily he quickly calmed down. Gabe says that no one would have guessed that of the two of us, I would be the one to upset Nicholas by yelling at a football game. Thanks again to Ben and Jamie - we had a great weekend! We can't wait for Ella to arrive and give Nicholas a playmate!

Nicholas is still doing really well with sleeping at night (with a few exceptions where I think mama drank caffeine that day). Mimi and Pop reported that he laughed yesterday, so mama and daddy are anxiously waiting to hear as well. He loves sitting up now (with assistance) and is still amazed with those things we call feet.

Tomorrow I will get to shop at our church's childrens consignment sale. This is the first one they've had since Nicholas was born, so it will be interesting to see what all I find for the little guy. He already has plenty of clothes, but I have a feeling a few more will be added to his closet.

3 months old!

We celebrated Nicholas turning three months old by having his pictures taken at Portrait Innovations. They turned out so great! Feel free to make your picture request of one of the four below.









We aren't sure of his measurements at this point and he won't actually see the pediatrician again until he is four months. The biggest change this past month was his ability to sleep through the night. Right as daddy was about to put cereal in his nightly bottle, he proved us wrong and started sleeping until around 5am. When he gets a bottle, we generally give him 5-6 oz at a time. The funniest part is when we take the bottle away to burp him mid-bottle, he will let out this really high pitch cry, burp and then calm down. His spitting up is not quite as bad as it used to be, so hopefully that trend will continue.

Nicholas constantly has his hands in his mouth, which made it interesting to get the pictures done (as you can tell from two of the pics they were headed for his mouth). He is able to hold his head up really well now. We love hearing him squeal in delight and can't wait until he really starts to giggle. He is still wearing 3 month size clothes, but they are getting tighter and tighter.

Truly Sleeping Through the Night

So the past 4 nights Nicholas has been a champ and slept until 5am or so. Granted we have had instances of this in the past, but never this consistent. Mom and dad are keeping our fingers crossed that this trend will continue. He has also been a bit better about spitting up, but we will have to see about that one as well.

Monday was his first day away from Mama. Mimi and Pop are watching him on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays while I work from home. This is such a wonderful set-up and I can't thank Mimi and Pop enough for watching him for us. So far we have received good reports on his behalf. A few people have asked me if I missed Nicholas terribly, and luckily I've had so much work on my plate that I haven't had a chance to think about it too much. Once things slow down, I have a feeling he will be on my mind constantly. The good thing is that he's just down the road and if I ever need my Nicholas fix, I can go visit.

Beach Bum

On Saturday morning August 8, we loaded down the Corolla with just about everything we could think of we would need and headed to Mobile. Nicholas was awake for the first hour and then slept for the next two hours. We were only about 20 miles outside of Mobile and I heard the little stinker create a very dirty diaper. Right as this happens we are stopped on the Dolly Parton bridge due to a wreck. After a few minutes of debating, I decided I would change him while we were stopped. Well as soon as I get him unfastened, the traffic started to move. We stopped off on the side of the road at the next exit and changed him and then hit up McDonalds for lunch. All in all the ride down was a very quiet and peaceful one.

Later that day we visited Mamaw at the nursing home, which she thoroughly enjoyed. My best friend from high school Aimee stopped by the house later that night with her daughter and boyfriend. Ryan, Nancy and the girls arrived about that time as well and we were so glad to finally introduce them to their one and only nephew/boy cousin.





Sunday Brian, Cindy and Drew brought us muffins and bagels for breakfast and then we left Mobile around lunchtime and headed over to Loxley to visit Catherine and Tommy on the way to the beach. It was nice to visit with them and also helped to break the trip up in half.



A few hours later and we were at the Beach Club in Fort Morgan. The condo was awesome - very spacious for the growing Thompson clan.

Nicholas experienced his first time in a pool. Because swimmy diapers don't come in his size, we put him in a regular diaper, covered by a swimmy diaper and then his bathing suit (thanks to Gigi). He enjoyed sitting in this amazing floaty that Ryan and Nancy bought for us. I know we will get lots of use out of it in the future as well. Nicholas also was introduced to the beach, but I don't think he was very impressed.

Our week at the beach can be summed up very easily - lots of pool time, delicious food, Sudoku puzzles, long and mostly ethical Uno games, and endless hugs and kisses from Gigi and Pawpaw to their adoring grandkids.

The trip back home was even better than the visit down. We stopped only once (just before getting on the interstate to change a diaper. I fed Nicholas a bottle on the ride home and other than that, he again slept the whole time.

Thank you Gigi and Pawpaw for our wonderful week-long beach getaway. I hope the withdrawls aren't too bad!

Fingers are good!

So the new thing for Nicholas that just started this week is to chew on his fingers. At first I thought he was just hungry all the time as I have read that is an early sign of hunger. The fact that he was doing this so often I attributed to a growth spurt of some sort. Well apparently mama was wrong about this one. Either he is starting the teething process (which I believe is rather early for his age) or he just likes the taste of his fingers. My guess is the former of the two. He hasn't been fussy at all, but we will have to see how this progresses.



Another first just around the corner is his first trip to the beach! Saturday we head to Mobile (which will be our longest road trip with the little guy - so keep your fingers crossed) and then Sunday we will head over to the Beach Club on Fort Morgan. We are so excited to see how he does in the water and to finally introduce him to his cousins and aunt and uncle on my side of the family!

2 Months Old!

Nicholas is officially two months old today! It seems like so long ago that we were walking down to labor and delivery at Brookwood.

So many things have changed over this past month. He is actually smiling in response to us and not just because he was dreaming or had gas. We still don't know what in the world he is smiling about sometimes, but it doesn't matter because that smile is so sweet! He has recently started sticking out his tongue at us. There is no rhyme or reason for this but I'm assuming it's rather normal.

His neck muscles are getting stronger and stronger. Although I still call him a bobble head at times, he is definitely working on control and I know will have this mastered by 3 months. Nicholas also recently discovered his feet after daddy put some socks on him (which we have never done) and he couldn't stop lifting his feet up.

When stretched out, this little guy takes up most of the crib!


Nicholas doesn't have a real schedule yet, but is in the process of creating one. We normally put him down for the night between 9:30 and 10:30. He will wake up for his first feeding around 1-2am and then his next feeding around 5. He is very good at sleeping in between those feedings and for the most part will go back down rather quickly. We are still putting him on his stomach, which seems to be the preferred position. Nicholas is a morning person because most every morning we will kick back in the recliner and he will smile and talk to me for awhile. This will also normally happen in the early afternoon.

He easily fits into the three month old onesies and I can see him moving up to the 6 month clothes before too long. He is still wearing size 1 diapers but also fits into the size 2s. God bless Brad and Beth for throwing us the diaper shower and to everyone who bought us diapers or wipes! This boy can go through them in a hurry!

According to the pediatrician, Nicholas is "thriving," so we hope he continues on that path...
